Poorly trained pilots, gunship weights are generally consistent, so there is no excuse for an overweight helicopter.

Flyer was it pilot error ? Or was it overloaded with weaps, fuel and armor ? The pit looks heavy.

Re: Show us you're Military Pictures
Had to go back and check some twenty four year old records to give you the answer but the entry I made back then was: 1st Lt. in front seat, CW3 in back seat, Crash occurred May of 1987 at Grafenwoehr, W. Germany, Weather was overcast, viability 2+ miles, Temperature is 45 F. Armament fully loaded with full fuel load. In route to gunnery range 301.
Pilot reported little to no forward air speed, 100% power applied with a rate of decent of >800 ' per minute, Tail wind component had negative effect on aircraft...It sounds to my like a settling with power situation. I don't really remember the "official" results but my info came straight from the flight crews immediately after the crash and was recorded in my personal logs.

Re: Show us you're Military Pictures
Here's the second picture of the cars being slung in...at splashdown. The sensation you get in DCS when sling loading felt the same when we were picking up cars...Almost as if something was trying to take control of the aircraft because it would do gyrations that were not of your making. All of your turns had to be nice and smooth and when you released the load you could feel the rapid climb...notice the craters around the car...

Overloading an aircraft is always pilot error. Great sling load pictures!

Re: Show us you're Military Pictures
Just some happy snaps i took on my holiday in Somalia in 93 during Operation Restore Hope courtesy of the US 10th Mountain Division that my Australian Light Infantry Battalion was under command of. I was the Platoon Sergeant of the Heavy Weapons platoon and got to play with all the good toys.
Heres a fellow (in the blue shirt) you all might probably recognize, i got to help "body guard " Charleton Heston for a day from the angry skinny fuzzy wuzzies..: and the nice big CH 53 that was our noble chariot.
and heres what the Somali Airforce looked like close up:
in the hangar behind theres a hole in the roof roughly man shaped where some Somali tried the ejection seat whilst still in park.
Our bunker that we lived in for a while - it was an old soviet GCI radar operations bunker. Im on the right side sitting down back against the wall , third from the right next to the window. And no we "all" didnt live in it, we were spread around the area in a defensive position, much like a traditional Fire Support Base.
I had to put these in, these are pics of the famous "Green line" in Mogadishu, i still have shivers up my back remembering the joint.
US Marine Headquarters Mogadishu
My platoon - This is 1 Sect Callsign Six Four Alpha ready for night ops. Notice the thermal imager (ANPVS 6A) on the back behind the gun, we also had IR spotlights, PAS 5a's, 2 x MAG 58 7.62mm Machine Guns ( Americans call them M240) and we carried 2 x 84mm Carl Gustav MRAAW (nicknamed Charley Guts aches ) heres a link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGJWNn72Nw8. We could move up to about 60 kmh at night with no light, sometimes faster when needed.
Heres a pic of our "weps", multiply that by 6 and thats what we had, as well as our personal weapons.

Re: Show us you're Military Pictures
ahhhhhh Flyer - The dreaded "end of course" photo, usually conducted after the "End of course" piss up , with lots of ugly mugs and aching heads lol.
I got to say that the old "Woodland Camouflage" brings back memories- we used to wear those in my old "Recon" days. We didnt get cams till about 1988 or 89 used to look like this -

Re: Show us you're Military Pictures
Great pics Six, i still miss it, especially being Infantry, just like that first pic , it says it all, you carry your house on your back and anywhere there's a clear piece of ground is good for a gonk. I still remember our "role " "creed" of infantry - "To seek out and close with the enemy, to kill or capture him, to seize and hold ground and to repel attack, by day or night, regardless of season, weather or terrain" and the unofficial one was" Give third eye and say goodbye".
Just added some more of mine that i have found - its not a "pissing competition", just thought you all would be interested.
