After a pretty long break I fired up my DCS Huey and flew on our server. . Ran into a couple of problems with control input. First, on my Thrustmaster TFRP anti torque pedals, even the slightest pressure on the pedal causes the pedal in the sim to slam to the stop. My question is how I can make the control input from the hardware to the sim more linear. Ideally, I would like to have a one to one ratio between the input and the and the result in the sim.

Second, as I was hovering in the sim, I was using about 32lbs of torques with a OAT of about 10c. The aircraft alternated between settling back  to the ground and hovering at about 17 feet with no collective control input from myself at all. This could be explained by the rapid tap dance I was doing with the pedals but I think there more to it than that.

As always, any help or thoughts are much appreciated. Comanchero.

I got the anti torque pedal problem solved. Simple matter of reconfiguring thru the Windows Game Configuration Setting.
My computer suffered thru a few electric spikes during the Hurricane so I think that could have been the problem. I'm still having trouble with the hover in the server. Need 32lbs of torque to get the bird off the ground and it will not stabilize. When I flew in the "instant action" mode off the server there was no problem.

Hi mate, I have had the same collective problem now for several weeks with no resolution in sight. I only have the issue on the 229th caucasus server, all other online severs and stand alone appear to be fine. Please have a chat with Six and Chic as they are both quite involved trying to sort this out and your input could help.
Mine started a few weeks back after a DCS "patch fix" update relating to a wide spread control configuration issues many people had after a previous DCS update. Hopefully we can get this sorted out as it’s very annoying to say the least. If you find an answer, don’t forget me.... What a Face

Well, how do I describe the anomaly? I slowly pulled in power, 21-26lbs= nothing. Pull to 30lbs and get light on the skids. Pull 32lbs and get airborne. Try to stabilize at a 3-4 ft hover and its impossible. Aircraft will either settle to ground or with another pound or so climb to about 17 to 20 feet. At said altitude no collective input will allow the aircraft to settle back to the ground. It's like weight is being added to the aircraft inflight or I'm dumping off the cushion by excessive stirring of the cyclic which I am not doing.

Comanchero, please confirm.  This is only happening online.  Just the Caucasus server?  Try the aerobatic server.  No mod restriction, no password.

I experience something like this too, maybe not as extreme as you describe, but I thought it was just the strong and variable winds out of the West that fluctuated the amount lift. That'd explain why its only in Caucasus server, too. No other dedicated servers I know of have winds like that.

Just tried the aerobatic server. No problem hovering at all.

I would explain this as DCS interpreting the defined weather parameters for that mission.

I have noticed that over the past 9 months DCS has been tinkering with the weather specifically with defined turbulence.  The setting in the ME used in the past did not do much but now it does.  From memory you can set it within a range of 0-60 with each increment .1 m/s.  So 60 = 6 m/s = 16.5 feet per second for the maximum setting.

I do not know whether the turbulence setting relates to vertical or horizontal turbulence or even if it combines the two but I think it is horizontal which of course will give variations in vertical lift produced by the rotors airframe model dependent - think Gazelle / Huey / Mi8.....

Also there is a variation of airspeed dependent on height as in RL.

I checked the current map.  Wind is set at 2 m/s with 1.7 m/s turbulence.  In imperial that's a wind-speed of 6.6 feet per second with a turbulence factor of 5.6 feet per second.

The A Company Dumass Needs Help Once Again 2018-111

So hovering in these circumstances you will be effected by varying wind and it is COMPLETELY different to hovering with 0 wind and 0 turbulence.

How realistic DCS models these variations is anyone's guess but suffice to say in this map weather you have to constantly adjust your collective and cylic to maintain a steady hover over one point.  Lateral movements of the aircraft even in small amounts and aircraft heading relative to wind direction with this modelled turbulence will result in varying lift as the airflow over the rotor disc is constantly changing - in other words you will rise and fall and not remain at a constant hover even in IGE.  Remember any offset from straight into wind will also effect things.

Reading the weather brief, hovering, taking off and landing INTO WIND is now meaningful.

Of course SIX may change the weather at any time so we all need to read the weather and note the wind, direction, speed AND turbulence...

Hope this helps some...

PS 8MATES flew a mission in the mountains NOE with a low cloudbase with a 20 knt crosswind and MAX turbulence and Thunderstorm turned ON... it was interesting and you could not relax for a second in formation BUT it was just doable.... Smile
Edit.... and yes it was at night with 8/8 cloud Sad

That makes sense. But what's the wind speed at the surface? Something like four and a half MPH? Barely above calm. DCS Huey aerodynamics are still a work in progress I guess. As I flew last night I seemed to adapt well enough to even pick up a sling load. But my hovering is far from rock steady. Thanks for the input Gizzy.

Cheers Comanchero,

yeah 4.4 mph with a turbulance figure of 3.8 mph.  No idea if that is a range of variance or +/-.  If the latter, then possibly at times 0.7mph <> 8.2mph. With the weight of the Huey I've no idea how that would effect things in RL but I would doubt DCS would take all that into consideration.

Another point is that you probably spawned at Tiblishi which I think is 1500' ASL.  Remember DCS gives wind gradient parameters - does DCS constantly calculate that gradient based on AGL or ASL... if the later then you can add 6.5 to 9 mph to the average speed at Tiblishi...

When I'm bored I try a series of tests  but it'll be some time Smile Smile Smile
