Oculus Rift and the Huey
Good news! I received my rift yesterday and have successfully flown the Huey in the rift. Best immersion I have ever experienced in a simulator. It makes for a much more dynamic cockpit environment. Using real time 1:1 head movements is so much more tiring than staring at a screen or using trackIR.
Resolution is crap in the dev kit but that was to be expected. I now have no doubt that the final product will revolutionize the hobby. I need to try and iron out some unwanted drift on the yaw axis and also work on a comprehensive VAC profile so I can order my copilot to do all the head down cockpit stuff. :-)

Whats the performance like with this surely its better than having 3 23inch screens and less demanding on cpu and gpu due to the smaller screens.

What's about wide angle view? If you have no co-pilot, how about using keyboard, take/read notes/navlogs, look at maps? Is there a way to look below or is it easy to look below?

Performance on the dev kit isn't an issue due to the low resolution (1280 x 800). As DCS developers are not yet officially supporting the headset I have no 3d. When the product is released performance will depend on what resolution the consumer version ships with. Plus if using a 3d oculus ready program you will need to be able to render two views at 60fps.
When I say co-pilot I don't mean it literally. I am talking about using voice activation control to emulate some of the common keyboard commands. It is not possible to easily use a keyboard with the rift in place. If you were to leave the keyboard on your knee the rift has vents below the eye cups so it may be possible to view it that way. As for physical maps - non runner for now. There is talk the consumer rift may have cameras to overlay real world on the screen. I'm not sure if that will be the case though.
I think for flight simulation it will come down to a simple choice. If you want to have a systems simulator where you manage a flight then perhaps the rift won't be for you. On the other hand if you want to immerse yourself in the feeling if flight then the rift is a winner. If oculus find a way to do both then they will have found the holy grail.

What concerns me is that really doesn't look comfortable to wear especially over long periods. I wouldn't worry too much about keyboard commands for the Huey though, all the main ones can be programmed to a HOTAS and one can usually feel them easily.
Will keep an eye on this for sure

Used it for a few hours tonight and I have to say it is very comfortable. The extra strap over the top of your head makes a huge difference. What concerns me is that really doesn't look comfortable to wear especially over long periods.

Do you still have to use your track ir with it or does it use something else for head turning.

Re: Oculus Rift and the Huey
As far as I know it has gyro sensors to detect head movement. However, I think lateral movements (up/down, forward/aft, left/right) are not supported in the dev kit, only pitch, roll and yaw.

How about drinking beer? Will you be able to drink beer while playing, or will you just knock it over every time?

Use straw or long pipe inserted in bottle bit like the F1 drivers do with that tube that goes into their helmet.(B/229) Grizzly wrote:How about drinking beer? Will you be able to drink beer while playing, or will you just knock it over every time?

So, does that mean that Facebook will record everything you do on oculus?
Jokes aside, I was really interested in Oculus Rift but now I'm getting worried.

Don't stress. Zuckerburg stated that he has no intention of changing the current gaming implementations of the Oculus, but intends to create alternate uses for it that would integrate with FB...
