Right! I'm a true believer as well! I can't even imagine what VR is gonna like 10 yrs from now. Seems like a good chunk of 229th either already has the Rift or plans to pick one up soon.

After all that work you put into your heli pit, Id be very surprised you get VR, Korn...thats almost too much effort for nothing, and VR right now has its limits. If I were in your shoes, Id wait until CV2 comes out. Im stuck in the middle right now and thinking hard about going back to trackir and multi monitor setup.

Re: Another Oculus Rift fan
I totally feel what your saying brother. I did put a lot of time in my pit but I think I can make them both work together! It would be cool to knock out a 45 degree turn and be able to grab onto an actual glarehsield.
My kiddos also like flying in the copilot seat so there will be times that the Rift wouldn't be needed. The Rift definitely has its shortfalls but the immersion can't be beat even with havin an actual Huey instrument panel lol. The only thing I think would be just as immersive is to build a 180 degree wrap around screen with two projectors. I wouldn't mind waiting for the cv2 but that could be at least 2 yrs out.
I will continue to make cosmetic improvements to my pit but will hold off any the bigger upgrades like the center and overhead consoles until I eventually get the Rift. If Oculous comes out with some intel on cv2 than yeah I would absolutely hold off.

Re: Another Oculus Rift fan
First weekend with my new Oculus Rift, which I bought from Wallaby.
After persuading my computer to just except the Rift to be installed I had a blast with the first flights on saturday. This is beyond awesome! It so changes my flight experience. Practised some formation flying which is so much easier now because I can finally judge distance and speed. I can't wait untill our next flight together.
Keyboard manipulation is a bitch though, but that was to be expected. Ingame chat is useless while wearing the Rift.

Re: Another Oculus Rift fan
I use Oculus rift dk2 and some custom panels (armament and ADF radio ) and is a great experience to use both...
I agree the image is not as smooth as in the screen (I heard cv1 is much better than dk2), but it's worth it anyways....
First time I tried long time back, It sucked, I was not able to read anything even getting closer, but a lot of upgrades happened since that point and now I can read almost everything.. Improved a lot...

Any Oculus owner ever had the opportunity to test HTC Vive? Just curious if it is as much better as more expensive...

Sure, but the question was a comparison between the two VR goggles...

Re: Another Oculus Rift fan
The experience is comparable for seated experiences but most reviewers say the Rift is better for DCS. I based my purchase on reading many many reviews and watching several video reviews. Setup is faster and easier for sure. If it's DCS only I'd urge you to get a Rift, if only to save money.

The reviews seemed pretty even between the two, with a slight bias for DCS working better with the Rift, so it was the price and the set up that sold me. I don't have the space (or the the inclination) to have room-sized VR so I went with the Rift...
And yes, the Vive does come with controllers where the Rift doesn't, but I didn't want controllers and liked that I had the choice not to buy them.
Edited to add: but I haven't done a direct compare between the two.

Interesting article:

This bit caught my eye in particular:
https://www.wired.com/2016/04/magic-leap-vr/
This bit caught my eye in particular:
One example: First-person point of view is the default stance for many of the videogame franchises dominating best-seller lists. Among them is Minecraft, which is played by more than 100 million people on the screens of PCs, tablets, and phones. Inside the game you see your hand or a pick. But in the virtual-reality version of Minecraft that Microsoft is building, the experience of holding the pick and chopping the blocks is so immediate and real—even though the blocks are cartoon pixels—that the player’s own presence is greatly amplified. Their sense of being shifts inward. In tests with volunteers, Minecraft developers discovered that performing the same role in VR feels far more intimate than it does in first-person on a flatscreen. We might call this new immersive VR view the “you-person” view, because it’s the position of feeling rather than the position of observing.

Re: Another Oculus Rift fan
Today's news: Zuckerberg dropped the price by 100 bucks (if Rift only), 200 bucks if you buy it in combo with controller (guess we can't use the latter for DCS, yet?)...

Actually, the price dropped $100 each for the headset and the touch controller --you can buy each separately (So the headset is now $499 USD and the controller $99 USD).
Also, if you're holding out for the next iteration of the Rift, you're going to be waiting until at least 2019. No plans to release a new version for at least 2 years:

" One is the Rift’s tracking system, which involves multiple USB cameras set up around a dedicated VR room"
As far as I'm aware, that is the Vive - I only have one sensor for my Rift...

Re: Another Oculus Rift fan
If you add the 'touch' controllers you add another sensor. I think there may also be scope to add a third sensor to fully cover a space - room... I think.... maybe that is what the author of the article is alluding to? - not that I know much about it.....

Re: Another Oculus Rift fan
New Update for the rift out,
Features:
In Oculus Store, you can now report user reviews as spam.
You'll no longer have to leave VR to finish installing new apps and games when they're done downloading if you have administrator privileges on your Windows User Account.
You can now mirror audio out of the Rift headset to your computer speakers, under Settings -> Devices in the Oculus app.
Bug-fixes:
Improved Oculus Home
Fixed issue with the appearance of Oculus Home on first launch.
Improved tracking quality with Oculus Rift and Touch.
Fixed several issues causing height and position to move while in VR. These issues were side effects of improvements made to recalibration in 1.11, especially in cases where one sensor was particularly far away. We improved that process to be smoother and more reliable. We will continue to work on further improvements in these areas.
Improved support for Unity content.
Fixed freezing and black-screen issues when switching back to an app or game from Universal Menu, or when un-pausing an app or game.
Fixed texture rendering and color rendering issues for certain types of overlays.
Improved support for Unreal Engine UE4 content.
Fixed flickering issue when Asynchronous SpaceWarp is active on lower-spec systems.
Fixed rendering efficiency issue with intermediate render targets.
Also a tray tool link
