Flying the Oculus at Showtime's house.
O.K. guys,
Like I mentioned before. I started this 12 day work trip with a layover in Showtime's home town of Portland, OR. He was gracious enough to swing by the hotel, grab my scraggly ass, and haul me back over to his house. We spent the next hour or so with him introducing me to the future of flight simming (and gaming in general).
I simply was not prepared for what I experienced.
We've all done the "3D movie" thing at the theatres. Kinda cool, but also kind of a pain in the ass...this is different altogether. Your brain buys into this almost immediately, and instead of the 2D world of "seeing it", then translating it into a "feeling", then using your appendages to move controls to exist in that world, you actually "feel" it, then move the controls, then "see" the result of what you just did. More like in the world we inhabit IMHO.
Yes, you look like an idiot. And yes, they have some minor (IMHO) issues to work out with some fuzziness, and resolutions, but don't forget that we're just getting in on this at the ground floor. As one of us put it, if crystal clear, sharp resolution is your gold standard for simming, then this ain't it for you. BUT... if you can forget about that (which I found out that I did rather quickly), and you would rather "FEEL" the experience (as apposed to simply "seeing" it), then I can't recommend this enough.
Do you remember the first time you tried Natural Point's TrackIR? I do...and it was the "1" series, and I hated it. However, I knew that it was a quantum leap in flight simming. Gone were the days of using the hat switch to determine where you "looked". This leap is no less "quantum"...in fact it's that leap times about 100.
Here's the vid I put together of my "cherry ride" with the Oculus. (THANKS AGAIN SHOW....you're a good dude to be sure....AND....you make one hellava good fried chicken!)

Iˇve been using mine since June. One thing is sure - ones brain adopts with VR. Brain makes some changes to feel comfortable in VR. It depends how much time it takes.
For my personal quest in VR is following. I notice the low rez only when I have to look hard for something like other traffic or targets. Cockpit is not super sharp but is readable and I know what to look for. You get used to it.
After some months the feeling of depth is not so noticeable any more, but it is still there and. Like in the real world.
But still it is superior over the regular monitors. Only thing that beats 1-st gen VR is full size cockpit with 180deg view.
Oculus had conference last week and prediction for next 5-years is promising. By that time we have much higher resolution headsets (like 4K) and eye tracking with foveted rendering (it render 100% area were eye is looking at, other areas out of center point are not render by 100%. So it saves computing power.)

Looks awesome! I know I will need a better graphics card. Should I have a liquid cooled PC for Oculous?

No, you dont even really need that powerful of a processor unless you are still running on an Nehalem chip or Sandy Bridge.

Re: Flying the Oculus at Showtime's house.
Hey Gents, I also had the privilege to visit Showtime yesterday and try out his Rift and man this thing is absolutely amazing! You really get the feel of being in a real Huey. Everything is spot on as far as the scale of the instrument panel, distances to the overhead panel, center console etc. The detail and depth of the cockpit is just jaw-dropping! The Rift makes flying the Huey 100x better plus addition of showtimes gametrix seat really makes for the ultimate immersive experience. Everyone here has already touched on how amazing this is but I just wanted to chime in and confirm that YES the Rift is the real deal!! I've been super spoiled with flying in 4K and I have no issue giving it up for the Rift
Thanks Showtime for your awesome hospitality and showing me the ways of the Rift. I will definitely be picking one up in the very near future. The biggest question I have now is..what do I do with my Pit! Can the Rift and a pit coexist? Time will tell I guess. But I can honestly say that the immersion you get from the Rift is 10 fold that I get from my pit. And that says a lot!
