"Oculus Rift makes all this bespoke cockpit building redundant". Discuss.....
(apart from the motion, of course)

I think Oculus rift would be a poor substitute for a full cockpit like that. Maybe in 5 years when the graphics in Oculus is better where you can read switches and dials better. As it stands right now that guys cockpit wont make people sick like Oculus is doing. Don't get me wrong, I think that technology is the future of gaming. I think it will be a good substitute for guys who dont have cockpits. I dont think it is a replacement for a cockpit of that quality though. I plain on using a Oculus type product in along with all my switch panels. Real wold switches will always be faster than trying to use your mouse.

+1
Correct on all fronts, Six.
I recall reading an article where they were testing a roller coaster sim with VR. Suffice it to say, the players were feeling sick very quickly.
EDIT: Well, there are people trying to come with solutions to this, but even the more inventive methods may have issues:

Might be an idea to wait a few years for VR to mature and some more research on health effects to be done. Could also be a little cheaper by then too.

Thanks for the replies...
I had the opportunity to try the DK2 this weekend - unfortunately not on DCS, but it did give me an idea.... And I did find it very immersive from a depth and peripheral perspective (and I believe that both are better on the released version), but resolution really does suck. Like a photo printed in a newspaper... You do start to ignore it, but you certainly couldn't if you were reading dials and interacting with switches. I understand it is better in the released version, but I don't think that much better based on the specs.
I think the biggest thing is not being able to interact with the physical environment - twisting knobs and flicking switches is good fun (euphemism intended).
Maybe this is the real future?
