I have a fairly new Dell PC I would like to upgrade the graphics card but know nothing about doing this. I understand that I have to get a card that will be compatable with my PC. How to I know which one to get? Will I need to get a new power supply? Here are my system stats.

i7-6700k CPU @4.00GHz 4.01 GHz
16 GB RAM
GTX 745
2 GB hard drive

Hi Rob, first thoughts are, PSU connectors. Most pre built machines scrimp on PSU's. Have you got 2 x 8 pin CPU connectors, or 1x 8 and 1x 6 pin at least.
The physical size may be an issue too. It may be that a bigger card will foul what I think are your external USB3 headers or SATA headers it is not very clear from the pics. Best way would be to borrow a card from a mate to try it out for size.

Are you talking about what type of connector goes from power supply to the mother board? Would I need to unplug from the mother board to know? As far as size, there are two extra slots on the back underneath the current graphics card. Would new card fit better there?
I know they did offer my exact computer with a GTX 970 as an option.

The power supply for a replacement graphics card is what I meant. Also a 970 or better will be thicker and longer so space may be an issue.

Space will be an issue with that motherboard alone, not to mention the case itself. The card will unfortunately sit over the DIMM modules on the motherboard, and its unlikely the motherboard will even be able to support a high end gpu. If it does somehow manage to clear the DIMM slots, it will most certainly cover the SATA cables there, as new cards take up 2 slots. There is a power adapter on that video card in your picture, its located on the front of the card - that gray ribbon cable. Guaranteed it wont work on a new graphics card, you will have to get another power supply just for that. I mean its all doable per-se, but you would be better off just either buying a barebone computer, cannabilize that computer there and use some of the peripherals (optical drive, hard drive, chip, HSF, memory modules) and buy a new motherboard, power supply, case, video card, and an o/s.

Not what you want to hear I guess, but you are talking about a Dell budget computer. They are priced to where they are disposable after a few years, not upgradable.

A economical upgrade that would work for you would be these cards. They are in the mini form factor and ( if I'm not mistaken) use less watts than your 970.
I own the Gigabyte card and it has been stellar. But any of these cards would work. Which ever is cheapest.

I suggest a GTX 750 Ti or Gtx 750...They are both PCIe-3.0 x16(same connector you have)and they are not that expensive(Ebay).They come with 3 monitor connectors(1xGisplayport)(1xHDMI)(1XDVI-I).(They are not SLI Compatible)
You may be able to use them 3 at the same time using (NVIDIA Surround)for 3 monitor setup.All monitors have to be on the same (Size/Resolution/MHZ) and If they only have VGA connectors you could use (DVI,HDMI,DP TO VGA)adapters and they will still work for Nvidia Surround(Cheap monitors also in EBAY).
If PSU is and issue you maybe able to use an PSU adapter to use an extra external Power Supply is named (ADD2PSU).You don't have to connect the GTX 750 (Ti) to a Power supply,But if you are going to use 2 GPU in 1 PC you may need the extra Power or install a High Power supply,just be sure your Motherboard can take it.(Avoid burn it).
