Sunday evening - More complex Missions - content, briefing & times announced in advance.
--------------------------------------------------------

1.
Following on from last weeks topic of Navigation, there will be:

(a) added to the map several triggered beacons to practice on using the Course Deviation Indicator (CDI)

(b) an individual exercise to drop off a reconnaissance patrol at a precise MGRS location - ingress using a combination of dead reckoning (Course / speed / time) good compass work to hit several ACP's (air control points) followed by your CDI picking up a low power beacon when nearer and eventually, an agents pops smoke to guide you in.

Egress via ADF using NDB.

You can practice it as many time as you wish without the peer pressure of formation alignment or having to lead everyone else Smile

2.
Activities demand led, i.e.

Simple formation practice flying circuits.
Formation practice flying to andlanding in pre-pared 'hot' LZ's
WINGS taskings
Gunship target range

etc..

Absolutely nothing to do with training but being the 17th, it is  Paddy's Day
and that it is celebrated both North & South of the border. Coming from County Antrim, here are a few educational titbits about the Irish (/Northern)... they may make you smile... perhaps..

*** Navigation Exercise ***

Pilot, things are looking dire, insurgents have expanded rapidly after receiving a large shipment of .50 quad AAA guns.  Some of their positions we believe to be indicated as shown in the below map.  They are not marked on the F10 flight map.

You are to insert a Reconnaissance Patrol at MGRS DK186 511, a known safe LZ secured by an OP sniper team who will initiate a location beacon and smoke when you are near.

Your flight plan is as follows:

From the runway, follow the coast line NW 100’ ASL to SP

Bearing 315 magnetic for 5 nm at 100’ASL to ACP#1

Bearing 020 magnetic for .75 nm at 100 ASL to ACP#2

Follow the road NNE-NE NOE below 100’ASL, keep very low and above the road whenever possible as this will naturally place you in a ‘draw’ or ‘gully’ until the hillside is crested and then to ACP#3

Locate the river, East, and follow low at NOE for approx 1.5 nm to ACP#4 then route via locating beacon on 52Mhz FM.

Green smoke will be initiated at LZ.  Land as close as possible to the smoke to avoid sloping ground.

Egress using ADF 1000 Khz as guide but use terrain masking NOE south of hill pinnacle to avoid SAM’s from fortification.

Oh, if you accept this tasking your nickname will change.  You will be known as 'Eejit' (it's not that bad, even I can get home with just maybe one or two holes though!)

For a quite flight, set your NAV radios before you depart but have then OFF.  Switch on the Beacon and ADF radios at appropriate times.

*** Using CDI and Beacons ***  Shocked

You can practice using your Course Deviation Indicator from the base airfield with a Beacon transmitting on 51Mhz FM.  It is positioned across the bay on the peninsular.

Thursday is really looking the day to be there, and I can't make it. Bummer. I need to ditch what remains of my social life and get with the programme!
