New Dedicated Server Hardware
So last year I upgraded a bunch of our servers at the datacenter, which left a bunch of "old" ones (think 2012) for test and development purposes. Well, last week I "appropriated" one of these servers and, on a whim, decided to see if it might run DCS World with the addition of a proper graphics card. The answer is, yes, it will.
After poking around inside the server and doing a quick inventory, I discovered that this box has 4 x PCIe x8 slots --less than ideal as most Directx 9+ capable video cards require PCIe x16 nowadays. However. After doing a little research, I found that the nVidia GT 730 comes in a PCIe x8 configuration, is Directx 12 compatible and its cheap. It's an older card for sure, but it would do the job.
Anyway, before I decide to dump 50 bucks on this hobby/side project that may or may not work, I ask around among my egghead friends. Like myself, they're all hoarders and never throw anything away. A little, but not entirely surprisingly, one of them has a PCIe x8 GT 730. After a little tweaking here and there and disabling the server's integrated video, voila -- DCS World.
So. Our DCS World 1.5.2 server is now running on a Dell PowerEdge R710 server. It has 2 x Intel Xeon X5660 2.8GHz CPUs. The X5660 is a 6-core processor. With hyper threading enabled, that's a total of 24 processor cores. It has 96GB of RAM. It has 2 x 300GB SAS disk drives configured in a RAID 0 array for a total of ~550GB usable disk space. It has 4 x 1Gbps network ports. If I was motivated or bored, I could aggregate those 4 ports into a singe 4Gbps interface, but I'm not. Give me another month.
We should be set when ED gets it act together and rolls the Caucasus map into DCS World and we're no longer running 2 instances of DCS.

I agree with the old dude, not sure I am digging the color. Good effort though.

Re: New Dedicated Server Hardware
Ack -- no donations please. Appreciated, but not necessary. This hardware belongs to my employer, not me. While it should be online for a good while, I can't guarantee how long it will remain up. I don't want anyone to resent me if they donate and then I have to take the server down. (again though, I do appreciate the kind words).

Re: New Dedicated Server Hardware
Don't care if it comes down tomorrow, it's the thought that counts and your actions to date (along with some of the other boys and girls) so if the donation goes your way, I'm happy with that
