Evergreen Aviation Museum Pt II
Hey guys,
Here are more pics from the visit Showtime and I took to the Evergreen Aviation Museum a couple of weeks ago. Lots of machines...really hard to narrow it down to just two dozen pictures.
====================
Some homeless dude in front of an immaculate Corsair.
====================
ALL the indoor machines were spotless...just like this Mustang.
====================
Showtime in front of the FW-190 "Butcher Bird".
====================
Beautiful B-17. For some $, you can take a tour of her.
====================
I'm sorry, but if you don't think the P-38 is one of THE coolest WWII machines...then...well...you suck.
=====================
G-10 version of the Messerschmitt done up in the "Black Tulip" scheme of Herr Hartmann himself.
=====================
Showtime in front of the worlds first flight simming experience...the Link Trainer. One of my LAN mates knows a lady from his church that actually instructed these back in WWII.
======================
The machine history board said this Cobra actually flew in Vietnam...how cool is that?
======================
======================
The Huey is like a good woman, or good wine, or a good pilot...it just gets better with age.
======================
The last machine my Dad flew while active duty in the Army. The CH-34 Choctaw. We were in Munich in 1967-69, and I logged many an hour in the cockpit of this monster while out at the airfield with my Dad.
======================
This is the bird my father took to war in 1963 in Vietnam. The CH-21 Shawnee. He said the single Wright-Cyclone engine just wasn't up to the task of flying in the high/hot environs of the Central Highlands (he was stationed at Pleiku)...but they somehow made it work. I have been to aviation museums the world over, but this is the first H-21 I've ever seen in one...it made my heart skip a beat when I saw her. I HAD to give her a pat on the nose for bringing my Dad home in one piece.
======================
First quiz question. What's this? You "Army Aviation types" keep quiet! I always loved seeing these at the airfields growing up....sexy as hell...and MEAN looking.

NAVY!!!!!!
More great Photos Ball - thanks for sharing.
The OV-1 had a 40 year career with the US Army as a surveillance platform.
Twin Lycoming T53's (Same as Huey.)
Apparently a real handful single engine - would be on its back in a blink of an eye if you got below it's minimum single engine speed (Vmca). (with an engine out ).

I use to see the Mohawk every day at Cairns Army Airfield (Ft. Rucker, Alabama). Samri, didn't they call them widow makers due to there tendency to flip over ...I seem to recall that description. I would've still loved to have flown them but didn't get recommended for fixed wing training until just before leaving active duty right after Desert Storm.

I almost got a ride in one at Cairns - fell through at last minute unfortunately.
It would have been a great machine to fly.
"Recommended for for FW training"
Didn't you mean "Sentenced" ;-) ?
After I was sentenced - I essentially flew the same role - but in a King Air - nice plane, but boring in comparison.

Yes Samri, Navy. I only tried to connect the dots by looking at it and googled it out.

Re: Evergreen Aviation Museum Pt II
Hehehe.....
I was standing on the tarmac at Love Field in Dallas one night (getting ready to do my "night freight" run in a Navajo), and one of these beasts lands with an engine shut down and the prop feathered. It was painted all black with no markings (or even any registration that I could see). When I axed the ATC dude who that was, I got a rather cryptic..."D.E.A." (Drug Enforcement Agency). I didn't investigate any further...
Mean as hell looking machine. I'll bet it was a handful on one motor.

The side scan radar was quite advanced back in the day - it would have been a great machine for DEA / Border Patrol.
