SRS Tutorial Empty SRS Tutorial

229th SRS IP: sr.229ahb.com

Simple Radio Standalone: A Mini-Crash Course

Simple Radio Client, aka Simple Radio, SR, SRS, is an app that allows you to connect to a SRS server (usually running alongside a DCS game server) that lets you use your DCS in-game aircraft radios to communicate with other players.

  1. Start by logging into the 229th forum, https://1stcavdiv.forumotion.net

  2. The second widget in the left column gives the Server Status.  Note the SR version, and find it in https://github.com/ciribob/DCS-SimpleRadioStandalone/releases

  3. Installation instructions are straightforward, just download, extract, install, and run.  But instructions can be found here https://github.com/ciribob/DCS-SimpleRadioStandalone/wiki#installation--setup

  4. You can create a saved profile (Favorite) for our 229th SRS Server (sr.229ahb.com). Then it'll be easier to connect to it manually, though if you launch DCS and join a 229th game server while SRS is open, it should auto-connect to the 229th SRS server.

  5. Now you need to configure things in SRS.  Set a Push To Talk for your radio, which is under Controls tab, labelled "Push To Talk - PTT" *Note that if you have the same PTT switch as in TeamSpeak, you will potentially transmit to both sources, creating an echo. Many pilots choose to keep this duplicate input, and simply mute themselves on TS whenever they run SR.

For further reading on additional PTT mappings, see this thread by Gizzy

  6. Next you need to configure your audio devices (Microphone & Speakers)
On the General tab, select your microphone from the dropdown list of inputs.
You can test it by pressing audio preview.

Below that is the Speakers section.  Select the appropriate output device from the left dropdown, and in the dropdown on the right, be sure NO MIC OUTPUT / PASSTHROUGH is selected.  My personal speaker boost is set to 8db.  Yours can be tweaked to suit your needs.

  7. Finally, go ahead and connect to the 229th SRS server using the Favorite you created in the first step, or by direct input of the address sr.229ahb.com

The next section is an overview of how SRS works, and how to use it effectively.

  • If you are successfully connected, look at the bottom of your SRS app to see 3 green electrical plug icons, which signify that you are successfully connected to the SRS server.

  • Press the Toggle Radio Overlay button to see the channels you are tuned to in your DCS aircraft.  If you see red circles and with a status Unknown, you need to be sure you are in a live DCS aircraft, with the radios and power on.  A red circle means there is no connection/radio is broken.  Yellow means receiving but not transmitting.  Dark Green (green light, off) means this radio is selected.  Bright Green means transmitting (the green light should light up when you use your PTT and start transmitting)

  • Next, while DCS is in focus, press Lctrl + Lshift + Esc once to bring up your SRS window in-game.  You can move this window around the screen, and place it wherever you like.  Once it's in a good place, press that same key combo again to "lock" it in place.  If you press the same key combo again, you will have a locked version with individual radio volume information.  If you press the key combo a final time, the SRS window will disappear.

With this in-game overlay, you can see what channel someone is transmitting on (it lights up from yellow to white), and what radio you have selected (it has an asterisk after the radio name and tuned channel).  This makes a nice visual cue, so that if you start transmitting you can be sure you're talking on the right channel without having to look down at your radio selector switch.

Barring issues with completing the steps above, you are now ready to hop on a 229th server with someone and perform your first SRS radio checks!
