Recommended Equipment
Hello to everyone. I am an FNG so please bear with me: I am new to online gaming, DCS, and to the 229th group. My love of and history with the Huey is what brought me here. I have a couple of questions: 1. I currently have a Logitech 3D extreme joystick that I use. Is this an adequate joystick? If not, do you have any recommendations. It has taken some effort and tweaking the joystick settings in DCS but I have gotten to the point where I can control the Huey fairly well. However, it will still take some practice before I am prepared to meet the requirements of the group check ride. But I will get there. 2. In the welcome letter I received there is a link to download a lot of mods and add ons to DCS. Do these downloads impact using DCS on other servers?. 3. Is it possible to get the password to the 229th DCS server prior to completing a check ride. I would remain an observer when I see active users on the server ( which I have not seen often?). 3. Also how do you make one of the nametags with your rank and awards? For the awards do you use real world awards or those awarded as a 229th member
Thanks for your help and thank you for allowing me to join the group

Re: Recommended Equipment
hello toro 6, all good m8;) You're here at home..
1) If you can control the thing with that joystick, that means you're a hell of a pilot. Most of ppl will suggest you the Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog and some pedals, for DCS in general.
2) You can have issues joining other servers with mods, but that's why we all use JSGME, allows you to enable and disable mods at will with a simple click.
3) I'll send you a private message for this
3bis) Don't worry it will follow.
Cheers

Re: Recommended Equipment
Hi Toro,
Whichever joystick you use, it all comes down to practise, practise and a lot more practise. I have seen people flying the Huey with only the keyboard and they flew silky smooth with it.
Regarding the mods: it is possible that your DCS might crash if you do not have a certain mod installed. It happened to me before. Like NeFster said, using JSGME makes it very easy to activate or de-activate a mod. I happen to know that the use of mods is under investigation because currently there are way to many. For now if you install the Combined Object 2.4 mod and 229th Combined Skins 2.0 mod, you will do just fine on the server. The rest of the mods are mainly for eye candy or HOTAS Warthog integration.
I hope you will have a great time with the best Huey battalion around.

Toro, The password is contained within the Welcome Letter. Go back and take a look at the letter and you will find it. I don't want to put it out in this message so we can keep our servers private. Thanks and I look forward to flying with you.

Drop by on teamspeak. As mentioned it is kinda slow atm because a lot of people are waiting for edge. But most likely youll find someone on the teamspeak server for some talks or a flight.

Hey Toro 6.
All good scoop from these guys.
I'm currently in Tokyo wrapping up an 11 day work trip...be home on Thursday, then would LOVE to do some flying online (been too long). I'll see what the "Mrs. Supreme Allied Commander" has planned for Friday, but I'll try to at least pop in and out of TS for some chats...
have a great day.

Re: Recommended Equipment
Hey, Toro. I am currently getting back into the Huey so that I can build my skills up for my basic wings check ride at the moment.
I'll make a note to hang around on the 229th TS when I can on what will be your Friday and your Saturday afternoons and evenings (that is my Saturday and my Sunday during the day).
As for your joystick, the Logitech 3d extreme, it may not be the most expensive joystick but, in my opinion, it is a good joystick all the same. (I myself use an X52 for the Huey but I also own a Logitech 3d Extreme and have always been pleased with the Logitech.) You may wish to get some pedals, though, because controlling the anti-torque pedals with a joystick rudder twist is really difficult.
